Buyer question
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
This is the question we hear most, and the honest answer has three parts: what we can observe, what nobody knows, and what to do.
What we can observe
On 2 September 2026 we put fourteen buyer questions to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — seven in English, seven in French — and recorded 210 answers. Every answer named businesses and cited pages. The pages cited answered the buyer's question directly, in the buyer's language, with specifics an assistant can quote. Businesses whose facts were not written where the assistants read them were simply not in the answer — including, on that day, Be Preferred itself.
What nobody knows
No assistant publishes how it chooses, and its answers change from week to week and from one assistant to the next. Anyone who tells you the rule is guessing. We record the answers and the pages they cite; we do not claim to know why. And when a business starts being named after a change, we say "observed after", not "caused by", unless the evidence supports more.
What to do
- Write down the exact questions your buyers ask, in the language they ask them.
- Put those questions to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini and keep every answer, dated. That is your baseline.
- Read the pages the assistants cited, and compare them with yours.
- Make the current facts of your business plain on your own site: what you do, where, for whom, in visible text and in structured data that says the same thing.
- Measure again a month later and compare with the baseline.
Be Preferred does these five steps for a business every month. The first measurement and the first three recommendations are free. The method in full.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
In every answer we have recorded, an assistant names businesses it can point to: pages that state plainly what the business does, where, for whom, and that can be quoted. If those facts are not written where the assistants read them, there is nothing for the answer to cite. It is not a verdict on the quality of your business. The only way to know your case is to ask the exact questions your buyers ask and record the answers; that first measurement is free with Be Preferred.
Why does Gemini recommend my competitors instead of me?
Ask Gemini the same question twice and it will often cite its sources. Read the pages it cited: in our measurements they tend to answer the buyer's question directly, in the buyer's language, with specifics. Why one firm is chosen over another is not published by any assistant, and we do not guess at hidden rules. What we do is record which pages are cited, compare them with yours, and change what your site says so it can be cited too — then measure again.
Why is AI describing my business incorrectly?
Assistants assemble a description from whatever they can find: old directory listings, an out-of-date page, a competitor's copy, or a page whose visible text and structured data disagree. The fix is to make the current facts of the business unambiguous everywhere they appear, starting with your own site and its structured data, and to check what the assistants say a month later. We do not know an assistant's sources until we read the answer, so the description is recorded first and corrected second.
Why am I ranking in Google but not appearing in AI answers?
They are different tests. Google ranks pages in a list of ten; an assistant writes a single answer naming two or three firms, and needs quotable facts more than rankable pages. A page can do well at one and not the other. A valid technical setup makes a site readable to machines; it does not by itself make a business get recommended. We measure the two separately so a client can see which one is actually missing.
